Yukon – Day 2 – May 25th, 2015
This morning I woke up at 5:00am. I thought that that was a bit early for me, so I went back to sleep. I think I got 7 hours or so. Some people only got 1, so I was very happy about that! I woke up in BC, which was a pleasant surpriseJ. Boy, am I that I brought my Eco sweater because it was sure getting colder! I knew that it would be a long day, so I got comfortable. Yukon day 2 – morning scene- Action!
We drove for about an hour or so and we reached Fort Saint John! Man was it nice to get up and stretch! We got breakfast at McDonalds, which I was very excited about because I like something different from jerky and bagels! I was glad that there was a nice place to brush our teeth, even if it may not seem that nice to most people! You really appreciate tiny things when you have your luxuries taken away – like a sink! We left McDonalds and headed for Fort Nelson, and lunch! I love when we have eco meals because making our own take a lot of effort! I decided to catch up on some zzz’s, so I hit the hay pretty easily. It’s weird how easy you fall asleep when you have much less than what you are used to! In the end of the day I probably got about 8 or so hours, which is less than my usual, but still appreciated!
After a while we ended up at Fort Nelson! We had a nice lunch thereJ. I really like Fort Nelson – it reminded me of a small town called Chilliwack, BC. My aunt and uncle live there, so we always have a lot of fun when we visit! I didn’t really want to go back on the bus when we still had time to be outside, so I hung out there for a little bit. There were a bunch of dandelions, so of course I had to blow some! I wished that we continue to have an amazing trip and that we stay safe and can help the Peel Watershed! I was standing beside a creek, and wondered if some water from the Peel was in there at the moment! It’s actually a fact that the water we drink has a bit of water from every ocean and lake in the world! I just think that that is really neat. I really enjoyed my time in Fort Nelson!
After Fort Nelson we headed for Muncho! Muncho was one of the places that I researched a lot on my own time, and I was interested in, so I was pretty pumped to go there! On the way, the forests and mountains really emerged. I was telling someone that out of all the times I have been to BC, it just keeps getting more and more beautiful each time! I couldn’t stop staring at all of the shades of green, emerald, and jade. The layers and layers of mountain were astonishing – they never ended! I thought of a quote from a movie called “The Fault in Our Stars,” and it goes like this,
“But my friend, my life is a roller coaster that only goes up.” - Augustus Waters
I always think about that quote because I think that that is what true positivity is.
We arrived at a place called Toad River Lodge. I went outside to check the view, and it was absolutely stunning! I was in shock because it didn’t really sink in yet that we were almost in the Yukon – our year end goal, dream and passion – but I felt it there. I headed inside and really loved the style of the place. There was 10,028 hats all stapled to the roof. 10,028 hats. I just thought that that was awesome! I knew that I would never want to forget the place, so I bought a postcard of the hats. I decided that I would buy a post card for every place we go, just in case the awesome picture in my memory fades. We left the super cool pit stop and headed for Mucho Provincial Park!
When we arrived at Mucho, I was dumbfounded. It was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. It was amazing – the lake was a cloudy turquoise colour. The low-ish mountains were covered with snow caps and trees. The lake was milky in the middle, but clear as a sink on the shore. Words cannot describe how amazing it was. I wanted to stay there forever, and I hope that I can go with my entire family one day :). Let’s just say that it was a good day to be alive. After we arrived, we set up camp. The pegs didn’t go in so well because we were pretty much on a mountain! It was cool to see how much the geology changes from province to province! We had our supper – which was noodles and sauce – and it was pretty good! Well, I guess I should say that it would be good; if we added enough water! It was a bit of a cooking lesson for us – always follow the amounts on the package!
We went on a solo after and I sat in this little area that I drew a picture of below. It was very calming and refreshing. I love solos, and I think that they really help me re-center. I thought back to all of the solos we had in Blue Mountain, Batoche, and the South Saskatchewan River. I thought about how thankful I am to be able to do solos. So many people don’t get the chance to just be with nature, and I’m glad that our Yukon trip has had a laid-back vive, which I love.
The hike we went on was one of my favorite eco memories this trip, and even year! I imagined a vigorous, crazy expedition, but it was anything but! We walked over to a little rocky field thing and I tested out my poles. They got in the way a lot in the beginning, but I eventually figured them out after tripping myself a few times! You constantly had to watch your footing or a twisted ankle was guaranteed! I loved hiking – the area looked so much like the gold panning river in Alaska, minus the bridge and trees. The ground was pure rock, and there were 20 m tall walls on either side of us. A small but strong stream followed the entire path. It made a whooshing noise that was very soothingJ. We hiked through the glorious dry riverbed (the path has water in it in early spring!) until we came across a mountain of hoodoos! They were so much more magnificent in real life – like most things! We all climbed up and took some pictures. I was shocked at how high up the hoodoos actually were! I hiked over to the stream. I decided that I was going to cross the stream over and over and over again. I had an adrenaline rush, and crossed! I got a boot full of water, but I was on cloud 9. Even if I broke my leg, I would still be the happiest person in the world. I was so amazed and humbled by the beauty of the place <3. Jenna and I travelled over the stream so many times. I think I got 5 booters, but I didn’t care. I was literally so excited to be in the Yukon and BC. It was awesome! I was glad that I got a chance to go on that hike, and I wouldn’t want to be going on the hike, in the Yukon, with any other group of people in the world because my eco family are my best friends. I would never ever trade one of these gorgeous people and I can’t believe how much I love every one of them. I can honestly say that I have had an awesome moment with everyone on this trip so far. I am really going to try to stay in touch with everyone after eco, and I hope that we all come back to see Dustin and Mel one day. It’s crazy how much connection can really bond you. Look at how strong and close we are – and we were strangers from the beginning. We raised $25,000 $2,000 - for the Peel Watershed – and we still got more money for our program to function. We couldn’t have done it without each other!
We went back to the tent and hung out by the fire. I love fire time – it is one of my favorite memories in my life; sitting around the fire with my family at the cabin, talking and laughing with my friends and loved ones. I am sure excited for the summer :)
This day has been extremely amazing. I made so many memories, from arriving in BC, to getting to Muncho, to hiking in the river bed, to seeing the hoodoos, to singing before bed. I am so glad that I’m part of EcoJustice, and I am so grateful for my privilege in my life, especially this year! I can’t wait to tell my family all about this adventure!
