Today was amazing and I can’t believe how privileged I am to be on this trip and am eco and in Canada! Today we were at this sign forest and Whitehorse. It was soo fun, so here I will go more into detail J
We woke up in Muncho ½ hour early. Hannah thought that it was 6:30 Yukon time, but it was 5:20 Yukon time. I didn’t really mind though, because we had trouble taking down our tent, so the extra time was nice. We finally finished taking our tent down and left for the bus at 6:00, 7:00ish Yukon time. We left on the bus for 9 1/2 hours to Whitehorse, but we stopped at the border. On the way to the border, we say 3 black bear cubs and they were extremely cute! I had this Webkinz bear that I gave to my sister (she named it Jasper) and it looked exactly like it, but like 27349152 times bigger! We also saw probably 100 wood bison. There were 4 herds that we saw, while I was awake at least J. I actually slept so long and well on the bus! I was very proud of my skills to figure out a perfect sleeping form. Some of my best positions were when I slept flat on my face, when I curled up in a tiny ball in a corner, or when I laid with my head on the seat and my knees on the back of the chair in front of me. They seem very odd, but for some reason they were comfy! J
We arrived at the border and it was absolutely beautiful. There were mountains everywhere, millions of trees and the sun was so bright. We took all of these coo pictures, but my favorites were mine and Kelsey’s Kasmine picture, and the whole class picture and the west-siders picture. I love taking picture, but I also really like living in the moment and not always looking through a lens. When we got back on the bus, I fell asleep again. I had a good sleep I guess, and I woke up to everyone singing “Honey I’m Good’ all around me, which was pretty odd…I didn’t realize I fell asleep though…I don’t know, but it was funny. I joined in and everyone chose different songs to sing to/with. I feel like everyone connected over that, which I liked. I especially liked the country songs (yeaaahh J) but I know Jenna didn’t! J I was getting bored, so I moved by Kelsey and fell asleep listening to my mom’s playlist of Toby Keith songs. When I woke up, we were at Watson Lake (aka Sign Forest).
I got very excited because my parents (I think) told me about this place and it seemed awesome. As a kid, I always loved looking at cool license plates and signs, so I thought it was awesome! I walked around and looked at mostly license plates. I thought of a plan to buy/get license plates from everywhere and hang them on my wall! My favorite sign was this one with a shoe tied to it, and another with a toilet seat attached. Those made me laugh, which I always love. We moved into this center thing and we were told that we could watch a movie there! It was all about how the Alaska Highway was built after the bomb on Pearl Harbor to (if I’m right) help Canada and the USA stay together during the ruckus going on. I thought that it was cool how the two nations joined together to help each other. It was cool to see. We also made a sign that says EcoJustice-Yukon 2K15- Saskatoon, SK.
We left the sign forest and headed for Whitehorse. I slept (again) on the way up. When we arrived, I really, really liked the place! It reminded me a lot of Juneau, Alaska, mixed with a bit of Mexico in a way…I like seeing things that remind me of time well spent with my family. We had Subway which was really tasty! L) We went on a little trolley ride up and down a track. I loved it- probably because it felt so small-town, and my life goal is to move to one of those! We went exploring around the town, and we headed to this bookstore that Kevin from Eb’s suggested. I got 5 postcards for a bunch of family members, and for my wall. I really love postcards for some reason- I guess they are like a more sentimental keepsake. It’s like a picture and a reflection all in one? I just thought they were cool J We then went to this restaurant Sherri’s friend worked! It started raining, so we went on the bus. My group was Dylan, Julia, Jocelyn, Erin and me! We had a good group (Sherri was our leader!) We left Whitehorse and headed for Takhini Hot Springs!
On the way there, I don’t really remember what I did, so that most likely means I was sleeping! J When we arrived, I was instantly taken back to Cultus Lake in BC! The trees were so huge and covered the whole area. In Cultus Lake, we got the itch, which sucked, but it was really pretty there. Anyway, we did a bit of writing there and I got caught up on the day before. It was very nice and peaceful there, writing. I thought that so many places in the Yukon looked much like the places in BC. I imagined the Yukon to have all snow and tundra. It would be cool if once you pass the border, the scene instantly changed. Also, it was weird to think that so many provinces have mountains, and Saskatchewan is the odd one out! I like being different, though. It adds that much more adventure! We went to sleep on the bus and I had a wonderful sleep. I am very thankful that I have been sleeping well lately because I perform soo much better when I am well rested.
I am so glad that we got the opportunity to make it this far in Eco and in Canada. We have been to every province that Eco has traveled to, plus more! That blows my mind, but also makes me realize how strong we are as a group, and how privileged we are as a team. Adios—Jasmine.
