Yukon – Day 9 – June 1, 2015
Today was a very long bus day! In total we spent 19 hours on the bus. 19 HOURS!!!!! I can’t believe how fast time actually flies by! It didn’t seem long at all – I guess I slept most of the time, but still, time flies when you are having fun!
I woke up in a random place in the middle of nowhere. We were in Alberta at the time. We drove…and drove…and drove some more! After about 10 hours, maybe, we reached Whitecourt, where we dropped off Bill. I was sad to see him leave – he was a big part of the trip! I am so thankful for all that he did for us and that he powered through this entire journey. We sure couldn’t have done it without him! Apparently, Bill drove somewhere ahead of us to stop and hop back on the bus. It was very confusing and weird… we handed Bill some thank-you cards we made and said our final good-byes. We drove more until we were in this weird place. About 3 more hours passed, so we stopped for supper at Tim Hortons. I was disappointed when people got coffee – especially after our Bean North presentation! I was glad to have a normal meal again! I bet you can guess what we did more of after that! That’s right! We drove some more ! We drove and drove until Wainwright, AB. By that time we were 4-5 hours behind. We had to switch busses there – and boy was it cold! I quickly got my gear out of the bus and hopped back inside! The new bus wasn’t supposed to come for 45 minutes, so I slept some more.
Spending all that time with those people on the bus really helped me get to know them, and showed me that togetherness brings connection, and connection brings power, and power means helping the world! Our bus finally came and we left for Saskatoon! I was exhausted by then - I didn’t even realize that we were in SK!
When we got to the school, I was thrilled! I was so, so, so, SO excited to see my dad!! I gave him a giant hug and left the bus ASAP! I told him all about the excursion and when I saw the rest of my family, I told them too! I was so glad to be back and have real food!
This trip was truly amazing, life changing, and pure glory. I can’t believe how privileged we are the only class in SK to travel that far (in grade 8). I am so thankful for this opportunity and I will never forget the awesome memories we made. I can’t believe how much you actually learn when you aren’t in school/a regular classroom. You learn real life things -> PAA, social studies, science, health, PE, LA, even math – it’s crazy. We have lived it – discovered it…
